Free May Calendar Download

Hello everyone!

This post is about a little follower appreciation! We love love love blogging. What makes it so awesome is all of you! It's super fun connecting with so many different people and we want to show our appreciation any way we can. This is why we developed the "Count the Days with Sincerely" calendar series. These beautifully simple calendars are designed by Sarah.

Sheet Metal Memo Board

A few months ago I was thrifting and happened upon a frame with broken glass. I wasn't sure what I'd use it for but I figured I'd think of something so I threw it in the cart. Up at the counter I asked for a discount since the glass was broken. I can't remember the exact number but I know I walked away with that frame for less than $2. This was an incredible deal seeing as I knew I didn't need the glass anyway. 

I brought home my find at it sat in my parents basement for a few months. Here's the broken beauty:

After Sarah sent me the calendar she designed {you can find it here} inspiration struck. I wanted something clean and a little more modern. I've used sheet metal in frames before but I've always painted it. This time I thought leaving it raw would be interesting.

I primed and spray painted the frame with a semi-gloss white enamel. Then I picked up this piece of sheet metal from Home Depot. I usually use scrap that my dad has at his machine shop because it's free, but he was busy and I didn't feel like making him dig some up.

I think I paid about $6 for this piece. I had my dad trim it down for me with a band saw but since it's thin you could easily do this with snips. Then he used the orbital sander to buff a nice finish on it. You could probably do this with steel wool or something similar.

I used plain magnets to keep it simple and add to the "industrial chic" look. My mom liked it, and it looked nice hanging in her bedroom, so I let her keep it.

Frame- $2

Sheet Metal- $6

Spray paint- $4

Magnets- Left over from a long time ago

Total: $12

Mom, don't say I never made you anything!

happy birthday with my hands

In an ideal world there wouldn't be any mass produced cards to purchase in stores. Hallmark wouldn't exist. No offense to anyone who loves going down the card aisle and reading each one because I enjoy smiling at the humorous pun that each one uniquely has to bring, BUT your neighbor down the street is getting the same card from her boyfriend that you got last year. How does that feel? I'm sure he spent hours lingering upon whether to get the more humorous one or the more heartfelt, but the most obvious idea is that it's not his heart talking. Simply said, I like to make cards with my hands... and heart and head.

My sister, brother, and mama all celebrate their birthdays in the first couple weeks of February, so I thought I'd share some of the cards I made lately ...

my mama's turning 50! I found an old photo of her and wanted to focus on her delicate smile, so I decided instead of using numbers to show her age, I would use my own hands. Turning both photos to black and white would add an aged effect, so I put the two photos together in photoshop. easy :)

The last two were made on the computer, so not all of them were technically completed by hand...but my fingers did the clicking and my head did the creating so you get the picture. Now go dig deep in your basement and find inspiring photos to cut and build from. These designs are so amateur compared to the beautiful designs found on http://ohsobeautifulpaper.com/ for example, but you have to start somewhere!

A peek into the intern life

I came to NY to work for free.

Why?

Because knowing people in the business means everything. Talent and knowledge are obviously important, but I've learned that names get you in the door. I keep hearing story after story of various people explaining how they've gotten to where they are now and it sounds a lot like "Well I had a friend who had an aunt who worked here, who had been college roommates with this person who was a student of.." and it goes on and on and on. It's really all about the journey. No one lands a huge project fresh out of school. I will work for free. I'll work really hard. Because I know someday they'll be able to help me out.... and thus the cycle continues.

Since I flew into NY having 0 connections...my number has now moved up to 3!


1. First person, well group really, is all of the advisors and fine people of the New York Arts Program. (http://nyartsprogram.owu.edu/) You should check it out, if you're at all interested in living in NY while still in school!

I have met and live with so many different college students who are in a variety of different majors, but all under the arts umbrella. I know we'll stay friends for a long time and their interests and talents are definitely rubbing off on me.

The next person on the list actually designed the logo, web site, and all other branding of our program!

2. PS NY (http://www.insideps.com/) - PS NY is a graphic design company based out of New York and LA. I work for Penny and Liz three times a week and I am soaking in every second of it! Here is a sampling of some of the project's they've worked on.

3. BOMB Magazine - Look for it in book stores or of course online! (http://bombsite.com/) It's an arts publication that is produced 4 times a year. The pages are filled mostly with interviews of artists, by artists. I work for Paul, two times a week as a design intern. I'm working on various advertising projects (postcards, posters, helping out at events, etc) as well as an individual project I've created, which is a small book showcasing ads starting with their very first issue, 30 years ago. (Watch out for more to come of my project in future posts!)

It's inspiring to be in the busy magazine office in Brooklyn, but I also love the fast paced graphic design studio, where I feel as though I am constantly being challenged and forced into thinking conceptually about what I'm doing, not just blindly putting photos and texts together. They are both completely different internships, one more leaning towards fine arts, the other design, but I'm taking notes and ready to step up my game when I get back to school for my senior year!

I hope these companies will provide you with some much needed inspiration!
